The addition of “Sayyidunaa” in the remembrances and supplications
Question:
What’s the ruling of the wording “Sayyidunaa” at saying “Allahumma Sali ‘Ala Sayyidinaa Muhammadin” or mentioning it at the supplication after the Adhaan, when saying “Allahumma Aati Sayyidanaa Muhammadan Al-Wasīlah Wal-Fadīlah”, etc?
Answer:
The fact that the Prophet ﷺ is the Sayyid (pre-eminent/leader) of the children of Ādam has been affirmed through evidence, as found in the hadīth of Abu Hurayrah in Muslim.
But the usage of the word Sayyid isn’t established in the call to the prayer nor at the Salāt upon the Prophet ﷺ.
So it’s a must that only the wording which have been mentioned are used, those which have been taught by Prophet ﷺ to the Companions who conveyed it to the Ummah.
As what’s required in worship is the coming with the wording of the remembrances and supplications which have been authentically narrated, both in wording and meaning.
Contrary to the hadīth regarding rulings and its like, which are permissible to narrate in meaning if a person was a Faqīh (person of deep understanding).
And if this addition was legislated and that which brings a person closer to his Lord, then our Prophet Muhammed ﷺ would have pointed us to it.
And the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, would have preceded us into it, and similarly the pious predecessors after them.
So for them to leave this in the arena of worship, with their racing in regards to that which contains legislated veneration of the Prophet ﷺ, their leaving it would stand the place of a legislative text in its prohibition, and that it’s an innovation and newly introduced.
And the Prophet ﷺ said:
(من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد)
“If any one introduces into this affair of ours anything which does not belong to it, it is rejected.”
And what points to that is what is found in the two ‘Sahihs’ on the authority of Al-Barā bin ‘Āzib, may Allah have mercy upon him, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whenever you go to bed perform ablution like that for the prayer, lie on your right side and say:
“اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ ؛ رَهْبَةً وَرَغْبَةً إِلَيْكَ، لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَى مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ، وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْت”
“O Allah ! I surrender to You and entrust all my affairs to You and depend upon You for Your Blessings both with hope and fear of You. There is no fleeing from You, and there is no place of protection and safety except with You O Allah! I believe in Your Book (the Qur’ān) which You have revealed and in Your Prophet (Muhammad) whom You have sent). Then if you die on that very night, you will die upon the Fitrah . Let the aforesaid words be your last utterance (before sleep).”
And as I repeated these words in order to commit them to memory, I said:”
“وَبِرَسُولِكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْت”
“and your Messenger whom you have sent.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “No, (but say):
“وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْت”
“and your Prophet whom You have sent.”
And from the establishments of the standing committee of knowledge-based research and rulings, what has come in their answer of the second question of the fatwa numbered (1760):
Second answer:
The basis of the remembrances and the rest of the acts of worship is stopping at what has been narrated in the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ, of wordings and descriptions.
Due to what has been reported in Al-Bukhari and other than him, on the authority of Al-Barā bin ‘Āzib, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whenever you go to bed perform ablution like that for the prayer, lie on your right side and say:

The Prophet ﷺ rejected from Al-Barā bin ‘Āzib having put the word “Messenger” in the place of “Prophet”, in regards to the remembrance and supplication before sleep….[until the end of the fatwa]
