The meaning of Principle in “The Four Principles” By the Mujaddid An-Najdi

Question:

The book “The Four Principles” by Shaykh Muhammed bin ‘Abdul-Wahhab, what is meant with principles?

Are they the Kulliyyah (comprehensive principles) which have many subsidiary issues fall under it?

Answer:

Principle here comes with the meaning as foundation.
The four principles are foundations which branch out into many subjects.

Shaykh Sālih Al-Fawzān, may Allah preserve him, said in his explanation of “The Four Principles“:

Qawāid is the plural of Qāidah, and a Qāidah (principle) is: the foundation which branches out into many subjects or many branches.”
