Past and Future sins being forgiven is specific to the Prophet ﷺ

Question:

Is what Shaykh ‘Utheymīn mentioned in his explanation of Riyād Us-Sālihīn correct?

“That every hadeeth that mentions, whoever does such and such will have his past and future sins forgiven, know that ‘his future sins‘ is weak unauthentic, because this is from the affairs specific to the Prophet Muhammed ﷺ”

Answer:

This aforementioned principle is built upon legislative foundations which many evidences point towards.

And more than one of the Imāms of the religion and those qualified to perform extrapolations, have preceded him in mentioning this.

Imām Ibn Kathīr, may Allah have mercy upon him, in his “Tafsīr” (7/328) said:
“His statement:

(لِّيَغْفِرَ لَكَ ٱللَّهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِن ذَنۢبِكَ وَمَا تَأَخَّر)

“That Allah may forgive you your sins of the past and the future”
[Al-Fath:2]

This is from the affairs specific to himﷺ which he shares with no-one, and : “will have his past and future sins forgiven.” being a reward for an action of others is not authentic.”

And similar speech has come from Shaykh-Ul-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah as it comes in “Majmū’l Fatāwa” (10/315)
