Is the open smoker a sinner (fasiq)?

Question :

Is the person who openly smokes cigarettes considered to be a sinner (fasiq) ?

Answer :

Sheikh Abdullah Al Iryaani (may Allah preserve him) replied,

الفسق هو خروج عع طاعة الله

“The scholars define sinning (fisq) as to exit or going away from the obedience of Allah”.

ففسق عن امر ربه

“He (iblees) became rebellious to the commands of his lord”

And the messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:  “All of my nation are forgiven except for those who make their sins apparent”

Therefore, those who openly indulge in sins, such as smoking and shaving their beards, have fallen in to sinning (fisq) which does nothing but defile their character. We ask Allah (The Mighty and Majestic) to aid us against the evil of our own souls, to forgive our sins and to hide them from the eyes of the people.
It should also be known that such people are ignorant and should therefore be advised gently as opposed to being called names as this type of behavior would only aid the shaytaan against them.

Allah knows best
