What is the ruling of raising the hands when making du’ā between the athān and the iqāmah? is it correct that it is a bid’ah (innovation)

Question:

What is the ruling of raising the hands when making du’ā between the athān and the iqāmah? is it correct that it is a bid’ah (innovation)

Answer:

That which is apparent is that it does not reach the extent of bid’ah because the default is to raise (the hands) when making du’a:

[ “إنَّ اللَّهَ حَيِيٌّ كَرِيمٌ يَسْتَحْيِي إِذَا رَفَعَ الرَّجُلُ إِلَيْهِ يَدَيْهِ أنْ يَرُدَّهُمَا صِفْرًا خَائِبَتَيْنِ”]
[“Indeed Allāh is ‘Hayeon’ ‘Karēm’, when man raises his hands to him he is shy to return them empty, unsuccessful”] (1).

This is the default and the majority of the Prophet’s ﷺ du’ā’s, that he would raise his hands.

Between the athān and the iqāmah the du’ā is answered, so if he makes du’ā and raises his hands there is no blame upon him, and if he makes du’ā in the last hour and raises his hands there is no blame upon him because the default is to raise the hands when making du’ā, except where the evidence has come not to raise or in a situation where the Prophet ﷺ repeatedly made du’ā and it was not reported that he raised, this is an area of ‘ijtihād’ (i.e. to be judged by the scholars).

Otherwise the default is that the person raises his hands when he makes du’ā due to the general hadith that has been mentioned and the many specific evidences that have come from the Prophet ﷺ , that he would raise his hands when making du’ā.
