The Condition of Shaykh ʿAlī al-Ḥudhayfī

Question:

What is the ḥāl (condition) of Shaykh ʿAlī al-Ḥudhayfī, the scholar who delivered the ʿArafah sermon?

Answer:

“We know nothing about him except that he is a man of sound Salafī creed, a righteous man, and advanced in age.

Nothing is known about him of obscenity, nor is anything known about him of backbiting, nor of innovations.

Rather, he possesses religious zeal.

He spoke against the Rāfiḍah when he saw them doing what was inappropriate concerning ʿUmar—may Allāh be pleased with him. He spoke against them from the minbar, and he was removed for a period, then was reinstated.

He is a man of sound creed who has zeal for Tawḥīd and zeal for the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.

He has not been tainted by any of these ideologies, nor by Westernisation, nor by any of the other matters by which others have been tainted—perhaps even some callers to Islam.

He is not a Westerniser; rather, he is Salafī, as we regard him, and Allāh is his Reckoner.

We ask Allāh to grant him success and aid him.

We supplicate for our scholars, and we supplicate for those who have precedence in Tawḥīd, in the Sunnah, and in goodness.

We do not know of anyone who has attributed him to ḥizbiyyah—partisanship—nor attributed him to any of these sects.

We ask Allāh to grant him success.

He is an elderly man.

We did not know daʿwah, nor did we know the Sunnah, nor anything else, while this man was reciting the Qurʾān.

He is a memoriser of the Qurʾān, proficient and precise in its recitation.

We were perhaps still in our mothers’ wombs—and this is true, and I am not ashamed to say it—while he was already a reciter, a scholar, and knowledgeable in the Qurʾānic readings.

People benefit from him, and he has neither changed nor altered.

We ask Allāh to grant him a good ending and that he dies upon goodness.”
