Recitation behind an Imām

Question:

May Allah be good to you, Oh virtuous Shaykh.

If a person is praying behind an Imām, is it upon them to recite the opening supplication of the prayer.. or do they join the prayer and remains silent?

Answer:

If a person joined the prayer behind an Imām, from the start of the prayer at the Takbīratl Ihrām the opening Takbīr; he follows this with an opening supplication, following the Imām in this action, because this is the place of this supplication.

And if a person arrives at the prayer, and the Imām has started reciting verses from the Qur’ān after the recitation of the Fātiha.

He should commence the recitation of the Fātiha, due to it being more obligatory here than the recitation of the opening supplications of the prayer.

If a Mustahab preferred clashed with a Wājib obligation, the obligation takes precedence.
