Hijra or Hajj if one had to be chosen
Question:
Which of the actions is better?
For an individual to make Hijra and to migrate to the Muslims lands or to perform Hajj?
Answer:
If the two affairs clashed and it was a must that one of them had to be chosen, then he precedes the Hijra and migrates to the Muslims lands:
- Establishing his Religion
- Actualising Walā (allegiencing) and Barā (disallegiencing).
Allah, the Most High, said:
“Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim (Abraham) and those with him, when they said to their people: “Verily, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allah, we have rejected you, and there has started between us and you, hostility and hatred for ever, until you believe in Allah Alone,”
[Al-Mumtahinah:4]
- Fleeing from the punishment of Allah, the Most High may He be Exalted. The Majestic and Lofty said:
“Verily! As for those whom the angels take (in death) while they are wronging themselves (as they stayed among the disbelievers even though emigration was obligatory for them), they (angels) say (to them): “In what (condition) were you?” They reply: “We were weak and oppressed on earth.” They (angels) say: “Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?” Such men will find their abode in Hell – What an evil destination!”
[An-Nisaa:97]
The harms of remaining in the lands of the disbelievers upon a person’s religion, himself, his honour and other than that of the greatly important affairs, are greater than the missing out on Hajj upon an individual if these affairs were to clash.
And the warding of harms comes before the attainment of benefits.
And if a combination was possible between the two benefits; then a person travels to perform Hajj with the intention of making Hijra and then lives in the Muslim lands.
And success is granted by Allah.
