Is a woman’s name awrah?

Question 446

Is a woman’s name is awrah? Is it forbidden to reveal a woman’s name or represent her by means of her name?

Answer :

It is not awrah. As Allah has mentioned the name of Maryam in Quran and the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has mentioned name of his wife Aaishah as in Hadeeth ‘And no doubt, the superiority of ‘Aishah to other women is like the superiority of Tharid (i.e., a meat and bread dish) to other meals.’ [Al Bukhari – 3411].

And also names of many other women from companions were mentioned in ahadeeth. So it is not prohibited to mention name of a woman in case of need.
