What Should a Bald Person Do if He Performs Ḥajj?

Question:

What should a bald person do if he performs Ḥajj?

Answer:

“If he has some hair, such that he can feel it when passing his hands over his head, then he should shave it with a razor. Otherwise:

” لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا “

‘Allāh does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.’ [Al-Baqarah: 286]

” فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ “

‘So fear Allāh as much as you are able.’ [Al-Taghābun: 16]

He does not need to pass the razor over his head.

A completely bald person, who does not have even a little hair, is not required to do more than he is capable of, since ‘we have been prohibited from doing what is beyond our ability.’ [1]

Nothing is required of him in this regard, as rulings are based on causes.

So, one who has hair either trims or shaves, but the one who does not—what can he trim or shave?

He should not go beyond his ability.

He simply makes the intention of shaving.

He follows the proper sequence: Ṭawāf, Saʿī, and then the intention to shave.”
