The ruling on mentioning the name of the one on whoms behalf Hajj is performed
Question:
Is it obligatory for the one doing Hajj on behalf of someone to mention the name of the one on whoms behalf he is doing it, and if he forgets does the intention suffice?
Answer:
It’s not obligatory, from the angle of obligation it’s not obligatory, but the Prophet ﷺ heard and said who is Shabrumah? Labaik on behalf of Shabrumah, and he didn’t rebuke him for it, he said who is Shabrumah? He said so and so, he said do Hajj for yourself then on behalf of Shabrumah.
Just as a person pronounces Ihraam for himself, Labaik Hajjan, i.e for himself, Labaik ‘Umrah, Labaik ‘Umrah Mutmattian bihaa ilaa Al-Hajj, the likes of that.
Likewise it’s possible to mention as that man mentioned on behalf of Shabrumah and mention his name, and it’s not a must to mention his name along with his lineage, and on behalf of so and so the son of so and so, it’s not a must.
This mentioning the name, the intent is distinguishing the Hajj for who? or ‘Umrah for who? even if he didn’t name him or mention him, even if he mentioned him and didn’t name him it doesn’t point to invalidity. Indeed actions are by intentions and for every person is what they intended.
So if he intends that this Hajj is for the one he did the Hajj for, or he made me culpable for that, or I adhered to that for him, or I committed to that for him, then this is sufficient,
(إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَخْفَىٰ عَلَيْهِ شَىْءٌ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ)
“Truly, nothing is hidden from Allaah in the earth nor in the heaven.” [Aal-Imraan: 5]
And due to the aforementioned Hadith also indeed actions are by intentions, Na’am.
