How Does One Who Has Been Conveyed the Salām of Others Respond?

Benefit:

جاء جبريل إلى النبي ﷺ ، وعنده خديجة، وقال: «إن الله يُقْرِئُ خديجةَ السلام». فقالت: إن الله هو السلام، وعلى جبريل السلام، وعليك السلام ورحمة الله.

Jibrīl came to the Prophet ﷺ whilst Khadījah was with him. He—Jibrīl—said:

“Indeed, Allāh conveys to Khadījah the salām.”

So she said:

“Allāh—indeed, He is al-Salām—and upon Jibrīl be the salām, and upon you—meaning the Prophet ﷺ—be the salām and Allāh’s mercy.”¹

“This is approval from the Prophet ﷺ. Therefore, it is a Sunnah and legislated for the one who has been conveyed the salām of someone else to include the one who conveyed the salām to him in his reply.”

¹ Narrated by Anas ibn Mālik—may Allāh be pleased with him—and graded ḥasan by Shaykh Muqbil—may Allāh have mercy upon him—in al-Ṣaḥīḥ al-Musnad (110).
