Ruling on swearing by other than Allah

Benefit:

(فَلَا تَجْعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ أَندَادًا وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ)

“So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].” [Al-Baqarah: 22]

Ibn ‘Abbaas said concerning the verse:

“Al-Andaad – (الأنداد): Is the Shirk which is more subtle than the crawling of an ant on a large black rock in the darkness of the night.” And it is to say: “By Allaah and your life O so and so, and By my life, and to say, had it not been for this dog, the theives would have come to us, had it not been for this duck the thieves would have come to us. And the statement of a man to his friend: What Allaah wills and you. And the statement of a man: Had it not been for Allaah and so and so. Don’t put so and so in it; all of this is Shirk.”

And from ‘Umar bin Al-Khattaab may Allaah be pleased with him said: “Whoever swears with other than Allaah has indeed disbelieved or committed Shirk.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi, and it has been declared authentic by Al-Haakim]

And Ibn Mas’ood said: “That I swear by Allaah whilst lying is more beloved to me that to swear by other than Allaah whilst telling the truth.”

And from Hudhaifah may Allaah be pleased with him, he said: “Don’t say what Allaah wills and what so and so wills”, but rather say: “What Allaah wills then what so and so wills.” [Reported by Abu Daawud with an authentic chain]

And its come from Ibraaheem An-Nakhai: “That he dislikes that it be said I seek refuge with Allaah and with you: and its allowed to say with Allaah then with you: and had it not been for Allaah then so and so; and don’t say had it not been for Allaah and so and so.”
