Don’t go out of bounds in praising, like the Nasāra did with the son of Maryam..
Benefit:
Chapter: What has come that the cause of the Kufr of the Bani Ādam and their abandonment of their religion is exceeding the bounds in regards to the righteous
His statement:
“O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of Allah aught but the truth.” [An-Nisaa’: 171]
And in the two Sahihs from Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him:
وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَذَرُنَّ ءَالِهَتَكُمْ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّا وَلَا سُوَاعًا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسْرًا
“And they have said: ‘You shall not leave your gods, nor shall you leave Wadd, nor Suwa’, nor Yaghuth, nor Ya’uq, nor Nasr (names of the idols);” [Nuh: 23]
He said: “These are the names of righteous people from the people of Nuh, so when they passed away the Shaitaan inspired to their people to make stone altars at the sittings where they used to sit, and name it after their names, so they did it. And they weren’t worshipped until those ones passed away and the knowledge was lost, then they were worshipped.”
And Ibn Al-Qayyim said: “More than one of the Salaf said: “When they died they surrounded their graves, then they made their statues, then as time went on they worshipped them.”
And from ‘Umar: That the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said:
لاَ تُطْرُونِي كَمَا أَطْرَتِ النَّصَارَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ، فَإِنَّمَا أَنَا عَبْدُهُ، فَقُولُوا: عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولُهُ
“Don’t go out of bounds in praising me, like the Nasāra did with the son of Maryam, I am only His slave, so say: the Slave of Allah and His Messenger.” [Reported by Bukhaari and Muslim]
And He said: And the Prophet ﷺ said: “Be aware of exceeding the bounds, for verily what destroyed those who came before you was exceeding the bounds.”
And from Ibn Mas’ood: That the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: “The extremists have perished.” – He said it three times.
In it are Masaa’il (topics):
The First: That whoever understands this chapter and the two chapters after it, it becomes clear to him the strangeness of Islaam, and he sees the capability of Allaah and his changing of the hearts is amazing.
The Second: Knowing the first Shirk which happened on Earth: That is was with the doubt of righteous people.
The Third: The first thing which changed the religion of the Prophets, and what is the cause of that? While knowing that Allaah sent them.
The Fourth: The acceptance of innovations while the legislation and natural disposition rejects it.
The Fifth: The cause of all of that is mixing the truth with falsehood, so The First: Loving the righteous. The Second: The actions of some of the people of knowledge who intended good by it and the people thought they intended other than it.
The Sixth: Tafseer of the verse which is in Surat Nuh.
The Seventh: The nature of the human in it being that the truth decreases in his heart and falsehood increases.
The Eighth: In it is a witness to what was transmitted from the Salaf that innovations are a cause of Kufr.
The Nineth: Shaitaan knowing what the end result of innovation is even if the intent of the one doing it is good.
The Tenth: Knowing the wholesome principle, and it is the prohibition of excessiveness, and knowing what its end result is.
The Eleventh: Knowing the significance of this story, and the severity of need of it along with the heedlessness of it.
The Fourteenth: And it’s even more amazing: Their reading it in the books of Tafseer and Hadith, and their knowing the meaning of the speech, and it being that Allaah came between them and their hearts, until they believed that the action of the people of Nuh is the best if acts of worship, so they believed that what Allaah and His Messenger made prohibited is Kufr which permits the blood and wealth.
The Fifteenth: The explicit stating that they didn’t intend except intercession.
The Sixteenth: Their thinking that the scholars who made those sculptures intended that.
The Seventeenth: The great clarification in His statement:
لاَ تُطْرُونِي كَمَا أَطْرَتِ النَّصَارَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ،…
“Don’t go out of bounds in praising me, like the Nasāra did with the son of Maryam..”
So may the salutations of Allaah be upon the one who conveys this a clear conveyance.
The Eighteenth: Advising us that the extremist will perish.
The Nineteenth: Explicitly stating that they weren’t worshipped until the knowledge was forgotten, so in it is a clarification of knowing the value of its (knowledge) presence, and the harms of its loss.
The Twentieth: That the cause of losing knowledge is the death of the scholars.
