Marrying a Woman that Does Not Work

Question:

A man was advising his companion who was intending to get married by saying; “getting married to a woman who does not or will not have a job will not help the marriage”. Is this advice correct oh shaykh?

Answer:

This advise is not correct. The bases for the woman is that her work take place in the home. And the Prophet ﷺ said, “A woman is a shepard (she is responsible) over the house of her husband and she will be questioned about that.” As for taking the woman out (of the home) having her working, mixing with the men or even getting to know men, or perhaps becoming friends and companions with these men. He and his children would be harmed as a result of that. So my advice, may Allah bless you, is to marry a woman that will remain in the home. And that you establish yourself and spend upon her and provide for her, not that she should have to provide for you.
