Beautifying the Voice with the Qurān During the Jumuah Khutbah

Question:

What it the ruling on beautifying the voice when reciting the Qurān during the Jumuah khutbah?

Answer:

There is no proof for this. For verily whenever the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) delivered a Khutbah, his eyes would become red, his tone loud and he showed anger as if he were warning us against an army. He (ﷺ) would say, “The enemy is about to attack you in the morning and the enemy is advancing against you in the evening”. The hadith is reported by Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) in Muslim. Therefore the one who recites isn’t able to warn against an army. Warning against an army requires a strong voice and this isn’t possible while beautifying the voice. Therefore beautifying the voice with the Qurān during the khutbah isn’t from the sunnah.

In other than the khutbah of jumuah, that which I like for myself and desire to hear is that the Quran is recited in the same voice that one speaks with and the person doesn’t beautify his voice with it because we don’t know that this has been reported from the sahābah that they mentioned that if the Prophet ﷺ spoke and mentioned a verse that he beautified his voice with it.

Even if a lot of the general folk incline towards this, then the inclination of them is not considered a proof so that we approve of these types of things.

This is what I like for myself and also when I listen to others speak that if they mention a verse that they recite it the same way that they speak. As for beautifying the voice then I don’t feel comfortable with that.

And Allah knows best.
