What is the ruling on wearing a red thobe?

Question:

What is the ruling on wearing a red thobe?

Answer:

There is a difference of opinion between the people of knowledge and there has come Hadiths in the prohibition of wearing pure red as has come that the Prophet ﷺ prohibited wearing the red Mayāfir (yemeni type of cloth) and a number of Hadiths.

And there has come what points towards it’s complete permissibility as in the Hadith of Al-Barā bin Āzib may Allāh be pleased with them, that the Prophet ﷺ came out in a red Hullah (two piece garment consisting of izār and ridā) and he said I have not seen anything better than it.

Some of them said most of it was knitted with red and not pure red but only some lines.

But from the angle of the majority of the proofs of permissibility of wearing pure red in all types of red for men, – as for woman there is no doubt in it’s permissibility – and for men the proofs are strong.

The ones who take the opinion of its prohibition say out of karāhah (dislike), ya’nī if it is pure red then it is disliked for a man to wear.

And what is apparent is that the strongest opinion is that of it’s permissibility due to the strength of it’s Hadiths.

End of speech.

Question:

The ones who say it is makrūh (disliked) may Allāh preserve you, does it include the colors which are close to red?

Answer:

No, like brown and what is not pure red does not enter into it, the prohibition came concerning pure red. And what is close to it has exited from the prohibition.
