Question :
An individual has divorced his wife three times in a single sitting thinking that this is only going to be one divorce. What is the ruling on this?
Answer :
This is considered to be as single divorce only, from that which is correct from the statements of the scholars. It is counted as single divorce regardless of whether he has intended to divorce her three times or just once as is the opinion of Shaykh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah. Therefore, he is allowed to take her back as long as she is in her iddah.
