From the Proofs of the Affirmation of the Punishment of the Grave

Benefit:

“Imām Ahmed may Allāh have mercy on him said Yahya bin Saīd narrated to us, on the authority of Humaid, he said Anas bin Mālik may Allāh be pleased with him informed us, he said: “The Prophet ﷺ passed by a wall belonging to Bani Najjār, so he heard a voice from the grave, so he said when did the person of this grave die? They said: “He died in Jāhiliyyah”, he said had it not been for that you would not bury (your dead), I would’ve made duā to Allāh to let you hear the punishment of the grave.”

Our Shaykh Yahya may Allāh preserve him said: “And this is from the proofs of the affirmation of the punishment of the grave, and the ones who rebuke the punishment of the grave are the people of desires, and the Qurān and the Sunnah point towards it like this Hadith and others on the affirmation of the punishment of the grave, and his statement in this ‘he heard a voice from the grave’ points towards that he is being punished,

‘When did the person of this grave die?’ They said: ‘He died in Jāhiliyyah, i.e that the people of Jāhiliyyah that died upon shirk are being punished, and whoever passes by the grave of the Mushriks he gives them glad tidings of the fire,

Allāh said:

“The Fire; they are exposed to it, morning and afternoon,” [Al-Ghāfir, 46]

It points towards that the people in the graves of the Mushriks are being punished,

“And on the Day when the Hour will be established (it will be said to the angels): “Cause Fir’aun’s (Pharaoh) people to enter the severest torment!” [Al-Ghāfir, 46]

As for the statement of Allāh Az wa Jall:

مَنۢ بَعَثَنَا مِن مَّرْقَدِنَاۗۜ

“Who has raised us up from our place of sleep.” [Yā Sīn, 52]

They said: “Woe unto us, who has raised us up from our place of sleep.” i.e that after they had seen they considered that (what they were in) a sleep, then this speech of theirs the people who said: “Who has raised us up from our place of sleep.” There is no consideration to this speech of theirs because they were Mushriks.” They cannot distinguish between sleep and punishment, so there is no proof in their statement, and from the severest of those who rebuked the punishment of the grave are the Mu’tazilah, and those who blind-followed them in this belief like the Rāfidhah who rebuke the punishment of the grave, and they rebuke the Sunnah from its foundation, so if you refute him from the two Sahīhs there is no value to the argument with him in the likes of that, and likewise his statement ‘Had it not been for that you wouldn’t bury (your dead) I would’ve made duā to Allāh for you to hear the punishment of the grave.’ i.e. that the punishment of the grave is severe, and that if the living had heard it they would fall unconscious, and the likes of this benefits as an admonishment to fear from the punishment of the grave, the grave is the first platform of the next life, whoever is safe from it then what is after it is easier, and whoever is not safe from it then what is after it is more severe, and it is the Barzakh (Life in-between this and the Next), Allāh said:

وَمِن وَرَآئِهِم بَرْزَخٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُون

“And behind them is Barzakh (a barrier) until the Day when they will be resurrected.” [Al-Mu’minūn, 100]

And in the Tashahhud of Salāh a person says:

أعوذ بك من عذاب جهنم ومن عذاب القبر

“I seek refuge in you from the punishment of Jahannam and from the punishment of the grave.”

And if he left this duā it is obligatory upon him to return and redo the Tashahhud and then make Taslīm, and the Ahādīth of the punishment of the grave are Mutwātirah, and rebuking the Mutawātir rather rebuking what is authentic from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ is clear misguidance.”
