Sitting and Prostrating while praying voluntary Prayers

Question:

O Shaykh, may Allah grant you success.

Is it permissible for someone praying voluntary prayers to pray while seated?

And does this permissibility include the Rātibah (the daily routine supererogatory prayers) and the general supererogatory prayers?

And when one prays seated, does he need to prostrate on the ground or does gesturing suffice?

Answer:

What relates to the praying supererogatory prayers seated, and having the capability to stand; then this is permissible while the reward is halved.

Regardless if it was a Rātibah or a general supererogatory prayer.

Due to the generality of the evidence in this.

As found in the hadīth of ‘Imrān bin Hussayn in the Sahīh [1115] & other than it.

As for the one praying while seated, they can not resort to gesturing instead of prostrating on the ground, except due to a reason which prevents him from placing his forehead on the ground.

And upon this was the actions of the Prophet ﷺ and the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them.

And Allah knows best.
