Answered by our Shaykh, the ‘Allāmah, the Trustworthy Advisor, Abu ‘Abdirrahmān Yahya bin ‘Ali Al-Hajūri – may Allāh preserve him – on the 9th, Dhūl-Hijjah, 1441H

Question:

What is the ruling on working in delivering foods from the restaurants to the houses and some restaurants have meat of chicken which is not slaughtered according to the proper Islamic way and it could be (take the ruling of) a dead corpse or it could be the flesh of swine, so what is the ruling on the one who works in the sector of delivering for these restaurants?

Answer:

Being that what is delivered to the people from these foods have in them what has been mentioned from slaughtered animals upon other than the proper Islamic way, then verily if he delivers the likes of these foods he would be cooperating upon sin and transgression and if a person ate from it not knowing that then the sin is upon the one who did not clarify to him for verily the meat which is slaughtered upon other than the Islamic way due to what is in that of the not mentioning the name of Allāh upon it, is not allowed due to the statement of Allāh:

(وَلَا تَأْكُلُوا مِمَّا لَمْ يُذْكَرِ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَإِنَّهُ لَفِسْق)ٌ

“And do not eat of that on which Allah’s name has not been mentioned, and that is most surely a transgression;” [Al-An’ām, 121]

And the statement of Allāh:

(فَكُلُوا مِمَّا ذُكِرَ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ إِن كُنتُم بِآيَاتِهِ مُؤْمِنِينَ)

“Therefore eat of that on which Allāh’s name has been mentioned if you are truly believers in His verses.” [Al-An’ām, 118]

And because they could electrocute it, and this is upon other than the Islamic way or if it is the flesh of swine or a dead corpse, for verily the dead corpse is eaten by them without remorse, it is worse due to what is in it of clear prohibitance more, and a person looks for suitable work which does not have in it the likes of these cooperating upon sins, and whoever seeks the halāl will find it, whether it be in provisions which he is ordered to search for the halāl in it, the Prophet ﷺ said:

(إتقوا الله و أجملوا في الطلب)

“Fear Allāh and seek provisions in a beautiful manner.”

Meaning make your seeking for provisions beautiful and legislated, or in other than that, Allāh guaranteed for His servants their provisions, for that reason it is obligatory upon the one who works in the likes of these jobs to avoid this kind of job and look for the provisions of Allāh which are broad and from their legal halāl pathways, if not he would be eating harām, his earnings will be harām, and earning which are harām have no good in it, even if it is plenty, even if they gave him for this job large amounts, for any earnings which are harām have no blessing in it,

“Say: The bad and the good are not equal, though the abundance of the bad may please you; so be careful of (your duty to) Allah, O men of understanding, that you may be successful.” [Al-Mā’idah, 100]
