Naming children with names of Angels

Question :

Is it allowed to give the names of angels to children like Jibreel or Mikael?

Answer :

The shaykh hafidhahullah responded by saying:

“Imam ibn Qayyim rahimahullah has mentioned that it is disliked to name the boys from the names of the angels.  This is something that the salaf disliked. However, naming the girls from the names of the angels is haraam because Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ الْأُنثَىٰ

‘Verily, those who believe not in the Hereafter, name the angels with female names.’ (Suratun Najm : 27)

They (the mushrikoon) used to appoint the angels as females.  This is something which is haraam and it is not permissible to name the girls according to the names of the malaika.”
