Choice of anything as mahr

Question 456

A person I am planning to marry as a potential spouse is stating that she has chosen her mahr to be a gift of my choosing which symbolizes my love, appreciation and commitment to her. Is this an acceptable mahr?

It is better for her to specify what she asks as mahr. If she have not specified then the husband might bring some thing which is not according to her expectation which might result in conflict or disappointment.

Note : It is permitted to give any useful item as mahr. There is no minimum and maximum limit for its value. See the following fatwa.

Q: Is it permissible to marry with a small amount of Mahr (mandatory gift to a bride from her groom), such as a ring?

A: There is no minimum or maximum limit for Mahr. It might be a ring, its value or more. However, it is impermissible to exaggerate in the value of Mahr, as it leads to many evils. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
