Meaning of ʿAlaqa

What is the correct meaning of “ʿAlaqa” as used in the Qurʿān? Some give the meaning as “blood clot” others “something that clings”, etc.

Answer:

The “ʿAlaqa” they say is (damun jāmid دم جامد); meaning ‘Blood clot’.

Ibn Rajab says:

والعلقة: قطعة من دم

The ʿAlaqah: Lump of blood.
