Inability to make up missed Fasts

Question :

“If Ramaḍān arrives and I still have fasts from the previous Ramaḍān needing to be fulfilled what is upon me?”

Answer :

“Upon you is to repay the fasts of the previous Ramaḍān after this current Ramaḍān, and there is nothing else upon you expect this repayment according to what is correct.

There are those who mentioned that you would need to repay the fast of the previous Ramaḍān (qaḍāʾ) and pay a penalty (kaffārah) however this is not correct. What’s correct is that you repay that which remains (from the previous Ramaḍān only).

“لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفۡسًا إِلَّا وُسۡعَهَاۚ”

“Allāh burdens not a person beyond his scope.”

And whoever among you is sick or upon a journey then Allāh said:

“فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنۡ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَۚ“

“The same number (should be made up) from other days.”

And this is what Al-Bukharī and others saw to be correct.”
