What has come concerning plenty swearing of oaths
Benefit:
From the commentary on the Book of Tawheed by Shaykhul-Islaam Muhammad bin Abdil-Wahhaab may Allaah have mercy on him,137-139th Lesson.
Chapter: What has come concerning plenty swearing of oaths, and the statement of Allaah:
(وَٱحْفَظُوٓا۟ أَيْمَٰنَكُمْۚ)
“And protect/guard your oaths (i.e. do not swear much).” [Al-Maa’idah: 89]
On the authority of Abi Hurairah may Allaah be pleased with him, he said: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ saying: “Swearing an oath may persuade the buyer to purchase the goods but it removes the blessing away from the earnings.” [Reported by both of them]
And on the authority of Salmaan: That the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: “Three people, Allaah will not speak to them, nor will He purify them, and for them is a painful punishment: An old man who commits zinaa, a poor person who is arrogant, and a man who made ‘Allaah’ his commodity: he doesn’t buy or sell except by swearing an oath by Allaah.” [Reported by At-Tabaraani with an authentic chain]
And in the Saheeh from ‘Imraan bin Husayn may Allaah be pleased with him, he said: “The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: The best of my ummah is my generation, then those that follow them, then those that follow them – ‘Imraan said “I don’t know whether he mentioned after his generation twice or thrice – then indeed after you will be a nation who will swear oaths when they haven’t been requested to, and they will be treacherous and not be able to trust, and they will make vows and not fulfil them, and obesity will be apparent among them.”
And in it from Ibn Mas’ood: That the Prophet ﷺ said: “The best of people is my generation, then the ones after them, then the ones after them, then the ones after them. Then a nation will come, whereby their bearing witness will precede their taking oaths, and their taking oaths will precede their bearing witness.”
And Ibraaheem said: “They used to beat us upon bearing witness and making covenants while we were small/young.”
In it are Masaa’il (topics):
The First: The commandment to guard/protect the oaths.
The Second: The informing that swearing an oath may persuade the buyer to purchase the goods but it removes away the blessing.
The Third: The severe threat to the one who doesn’t buy or sell except by swearing an oath.
The Fourth: Notifying that this sin is magnified (when done) without it being necessary.
The Fifth: Censoring those who swear oaths while not being asked to swear/testify.
The Sixth: His ﷺ praise upon the first three or four generations, and he mentioned what will occur (after them).
The Seventh: Those who bear witness whilst not having been asked to bear witness.
The Eighth: It being that the Salaf used to beat the small children upon bearing witness and making covenants.
