Chapter: His statement:

“And if We let him taste mercy from Us after an adversity which has touched him, he will surely say, “This is [due] to me, and I do not think the Hour will occur; and [even] if I should be returned to my Lord, indeed, for me there will be with Him the best.” But We will surely inform those who disbelieved about what they did, and We will surely make them taste a massive punishment.” [Fussilat: 50]

Mujaahid said: “This is by my works, and I am deserving of it.” And Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “He intends it’s from himself.”

And His statement:

(إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُۥ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عِندِىٓۚ)

He said, “I was only given it because of knowledge I have.” [Al-Qasas: 78]

Qataadah said: “Upon knowledge of the different methods of making money,” and others said: “Upon knowledge from Allaah that I am deserving of it.” And this is the statement of Mujaahid: “I was given it out of honour.”

And from Abi Hurairah that he heard the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ say: There were three men from Bani Israa’eel, a leper, a bald and a blind. So Allaah wanted to test them, so He sent to them an angel, so he came to the leper, so he said to him: “What thing is the most beloved to you? He said: “Good colour and good skin, and to be rid of what makes me loathsome to the people”. He said: So he wiped him and his loathsomeness went away, and he was given good colour and good skin. He said: “What wealth is the most beloved to you. He said: “Camels or cows – Ishaaq doubted – So he was given a pregnant camel and it was said may Allaah bless it for you. Then he came to the bald man and said: “What thing is the most beloved to you?” He said: “Good hair and to be rid of what makes me loathsome to the people”. So he wiped him and his loathsomeness went away and he was given good hair. Then he said: “What wealth is the most beloved to you?” He said: “Camels or cows.” So he was given a pregnant cow and it was said may Allaah bless it for you. Then he came to the blind man and said: “What thing is the most beloved to you?” He said: “That Allaah restore to me my eye sight so that I may see the people.” So he wiped him and Allaah restored his eye sight. He said: “What wealth is the most beloved to you?” He said: “Goats.” So he was given a pregnant sheep. Flocks and herds were produced for the three men, the first having a valley of camels, the second one, a valley of cows and the third one a valley of sheep. Then he came to the leper in his (previous) form, and said: “I am a poor man and my resources have been exhausted in my journey, and I have no means of reaching my destination today except through Allaah and then you, so I ask you by Him Who gave you good colour and good skin and wealth, for a camel by which I may get to my destination”. So he said: “I have many dues to pay.” So he said: “I think I recognize you. Were you not a leper whom people found loathsome and a poor man then Allaah gave you wealth?” He said: “Indeed I inherited this wealth through generations”. So he said: “If you are lying, may Allaah return you to what you were”. Then he came to the bald man in his (previous) form and said the likes of what he said to the previous so he responded similarly to what the previous did. So he said: “If you are lying, may Allah return you to what you were”.

Then he came to the blind and said: “I am a poor man and my resources have been exhausted in my journey, and I have no means of reaching my destination today except through Allaah and then you, so I ask you by Him Who restored your eyesight for a sheep by which I may get to the end of my journey”. He said: “Indeed, I was blind then Allaah restored my eyesight, so take what you wish and leave what you wish. I swear by Allaah that I shall not argue with you today to return anything you take, for the sake of Allaah”. So he said: “Keep your wealth. You have all been tested, and Allaah is pleased with you and displeased with your two companions”.
