The ‘Ulluw of Allah

Answered by our Shaykh, the ‘Allaamah, the Trustworthy Advisor, Abu ‘Abdirrahman Yahya bin ‘Ali Al-Hajoori – may Allaah preserve him –

Question:

What’s the meaning of this statement from someone:

“Allah existed without there being a place, then He created a place, and He now is just like how He was before he created the place”

Answer:

This is bizarre sophistry. They want by this to cancel out evidences that Ibn Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said regarding it:

There is about one thousand evidences or more, Mutawātir evidences proving that Allah is above His throne.

Yet they conclude that Allah is everywhere and not above His throne, and this is falsehood, as Allah, the Most High, says:

“الرَّحْمَنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوَى”

“The Most Beneficent (Allah) Istawa (rose over) the (Mighty) Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty).” [Surah Ta-Ha:5]

And He, Exalted is He, said:

“ثُمَّ اسْتَوَى عَلَى الْعَرْشِ”

“…then He Istawa (rose over) the Throne (really in a manner that suits His Majesty).” [Surah Al-A’raf:54]

And He, the Mighty and Majestic, said:

“أَأَمِنتُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ”

“Do you feel secure that He, Who is over the heaven (Allah)” [Surah Al-Mulk:16]

And He, the Blessed and Most High, said:

“وَهُوَ الْقَاهِرُ فَوْقَ عِبَادِهِ”

“And He is the Irresistible, above His slaves.” [Surah Al-An’am:18]

Therefore this statement is falsehood, oftly repeated by the extreme Sufis.

Wallahul Musta’ān.
