Ruling on saying what Allah wills and what Mohammed ﷺ wills
Chapter: The statement ‘What Allaah and you wish’
From Qutailah: “That a Jew came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “You all do Shirk, you all say: “What Allaah and you (Muhammad) wish,” and you all say “By the Ka’bah.” So the Prophet ﷺ ordered them if they intend to swear and oath to say “By the Lord of the Ka’bah”, and to say “What Allaah wishes then you.”
[Reported by An-Nasaa’i and he authenticated it]
And he with him also from Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allah be pleased with them both: That a man said to the Prophet ﷺ: “What Allah and you wish.” So he said: “Did you make me an equal to Allah? say: “What Allah alone wishes.”
And from Ibn Majah from Tufail – the maternal brother of Aa’ishah – he said: “I saw in a dream that I came across a group of Jews, I said: “What a good people you all would be if you didn’t say ‘Uzair is the son of God’.” They said: “And what a good people you all would be if you didn’t say What Allaah wills and what Muhammad wills.” Then I came across a group of Christians, so I said: “What a good people you all would be if you didn’t say ‘Eesaa (Jesus) is the son of God.” They said: “And what a good people you all would be if you didn’t say what Allaah wills and what Muhammad wills.” So when I woke up I informed who I informed then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him, he said: “Did you inform anyone about it? I said: “Yes” So he thanked Allaah and praised Him, then he said: “As for what proceeds, for indeed Tufail saw a dream and informed who he informed from you, and indeed you all say a statement which nothing but such and such prevented me from prohibiting you from it, so don’t say: “What Allaah wills and what Muhammad wills but say what Allaah wills alone.”
In it are Masaa’il (topics):
The First: The knowledge of the Jews of minor Shirk.
The Second: The understanding of a person if he has whims/desires.
The Third: His statement ﷺ: “Did you make me an equal to Allaah?” So how about one who says: “I don’t have anyone to seek refuge in other than you” and the two verses of poetry after it.
The Fourth: That it was not from major Shirk due to his statement: “such and such prevented me…”
The Fifth: That the righteous dream is from the divisions of revelation.
The Sixth: That it could be a reason for the legislation of some rulings.
