Giving Mahr as 12 Uqiyah

Question 430

I heard that it’s sunnah to give 12 uqiyah as mahr. How much saudi riyal costs 12 uqiyah now a days?

Answer:

Our Shaykh Ibn Hizam said in his book Fath-ul-Allam (3/486) :

What is the Mustahabb for the amout of Mahr for the one who have (financial) capability and ease ?

Shaykh ul Islam said as in Majmoo-ul-Fatawa (32/194) : The mustahabb in mahr while having the (financial) capability and ease is not to increase more than the mahr of wives of the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and his daughters and it was between 400 dirhams to 500 dirhams equivalent to 19 dinar including what he pays immediately and what he pays later. And this is the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and whoever does that he has followed the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) in mahr. And Abu Hurairah (Radiallahu anhu) said, ‘The mahr amount was 10 Uqiyah while the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) was among us and closed his hands and it was 400 dirhams’, Narrated by Ahmed in his Musnad [(2/367), graded as Sahih by Our Shaykh Ibn Hizam] and Abu Dawud in his ‘Sunan’ [but this hadeeth was not in Sunan Abu Dawud as mentioned by Shaykh Ibn Hizam].

And Abu Salamah said to Aaishah (Radiallahu anha), How much was the mahr of the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) ? She said, His mahr for his wives was 12 Uqiyyah and one Nash. She said, “do you know what is Nash ?”  He said, “I said, No” , She said, “it is half Uqiyah” . So it was (the total) 500 dirhams. And it was the mahr of the the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) for his wives. Reported by Muslim (1426).

….

(At the end) This is the for the one who have capability and ease and as for the poor one it is not for him to give as mahr for a woman except what he is can pay without difficulty.

End of the Quote from book Fath-ul-Allam

One dirham is approximately 2.975 grams of silver as mentioned by our Shaykh Ibn Hizam in Fath Al Allam (2/431). So 500 dirhams is approximately 1.4875 kilo of silver. From this a person can calculate how much it costs in the desired currency.
